Padang(29/08/2017) - Angkot is a common used public transportation in Padang, it's because angkot has a route that almost touches all corners of the Padang city. There are several colors that differentiate the angkot routes, also the big line of angkot routes had written on angkot's windshield. For example; there is a light blue angkot with long snout had written 'Jati' on the windshield, and there is another light blue angkot with a short snout that written 'kampus' on the windshield. Even though these two light blue angkot have the same color, the routes of them are different. And there are many more colors of angkot in Padang, not like many other cities in Indonesia that distinguishes the angkot routes by number.
Beside the routes that extend throughout the city, angkot is also efficient to transport many passengers but still comfortable. Because of the use of angkot that has dominated the transportation in Padang since more than 2 decades lately, of course angkot itself already has passenger from most of the population of public transportation users. And also, the fare is quite cheap though.
Lately, angkot is quite aggressive. Most of angkot drivers are often reckless in driving to pursue deposit target. They are only concerned with achieving the target and ignore the comfort of the passengers. Sometimes, they curse if someone does not want to ride on their angkot. Angkot has become a very serious business nowadays.
As time goes by and the advance of science in technology, public transport order appears through online media. Let's say it go-jek, go-car, etc, has attracted public's attention so much. Not only accepting orders for transportation service, go-jek company also accept orders delivery of goods and food. Because nowadays people are more prefer the practical things, online ordering may be a very popular choice. Due to the high public enthusiasm, angkot began to feel threatened by the existence of go-jek.
Also, there are TransPadang that lately exist in Padang. This big bus certainly feels more comfortable because it is more roomy and looks clean, and there are also AC on TransPadang. And of course, why people choose this public transportation because of the cheaper cost. Slowly, angkot start losing its loyal passengers. Not just because of the other new public transport, but also the attitude of the driver became worse. But sure, they won't admit it.
This situation makes the angkot driver angry and furious, They blame other public transports that was recently exist in Padang. So that they do a demonstration and strikes(08/28/2017), cause they feel threatened. The angry angkot driver encourage other drivers to participate in this action, they are intercepting an angkot that still take passengers. One of the victims of this action is Herfanni (20). She just got off the TransPadang and want to take an angkot to campus. After she got one and move several meters, other angkot comes to intercepting the angkot she has picked up by. The driver shout and forcing her to descend, forcely she had to get off from angkot.
(the demonstration view from TransPadang)
All this social jealousy of online services such as go-jek and others do occur in almost every major city in Indonesia. Some cases even become very dangerous and cause casualties. We hope that the citizens of Indonesia can learn more about patience and mutual respect, so that this case won't get worse even more.
